Adamson’s Garden at Malibu Lagoon

Organic Garden Club members enjoyed the ambiance of Malibu Lagoon and Surfrider’s Beach on the Adamson’s garden and house tour. Cool ocean breezes charged with antioxidant electricity that increases serotonin, relieving stress, and boosting energy.

Suzanne, our docent, told us fascinating botanical and human history about this property, where the Chumash people lived for thousands of years. We saw one hundred year old trees next to the Malibu Lagoon and Bird Sanctuary, a rose garden, and a fig tree that were planted after the Adamson family brought in tons of soil to create this garden.

We marveled at the Mediterranean Fan Palms by a beautiful tiled fountain at the Adamson’s Malibu house.

Organic Garden Club members loved the wonderful tiled fountains that surround the Adamson’s Malibu house made at the Malibu Pottery Factory, which was said to have the most beautiful tile work of the era. The house is also filled with these artistic tiles whose secret glazes have kept the colors brilliant through the years.

Our docent, Suzanne, told us about the 100 year old Bunya-Bunya tree with edible nuts and the Adamson’s House hand blown and bottle glass windows with tiled edges. Mrs Adamson loved Matilija Poppies and in the patio she planted ginger plants, fuchsia, naked ladies, and gardenias.  Beyond the patio area is a wedding venue, surrounded by Flax Leaf Paperback tree, a White Sapote, Cow-Inch tree, and Tea trees.

Organic Garden Club members toured the 1930 Spanish Colonial style Adamson’s house with another docent steeped in knowledge of the area’s history. The inside of the house is covered with intricate tiles, wrought iron decorations, and painted ceilings, cupboards, and closets, similar to Hollywood movie star homes of the era. The house was constructed with steel to hold the weight of the chimneys and tiled roof.

Gorgeous tiled floors and wrought iron sconces, hand railings, door, and window frames were both on the inside and outside of the house . We could see the Malibu pier in our view from the balcony on the Adamson’s House.

We ended our tour of the Adamson’s garden and house at the Farm Cafe on the Pier, a farm to table restaurant with local organic ingredients where we viewed the Adamson’s house and the surfers from our table.
